The Art of Critique

As part of the Black Writer’s Collective, your critiques are valuable to fellow members.
They are looking for a more detailed response than “I like it” or “That’s nice.”
This workshop will help you to more effectively review the work of your peers. There are several areas that you will learn to evaluate including characters, storyline/plot, setting, wording, point of view/voice, conflict/tension, clarity/detail.
The session will involve an overview of critique evaluation techniques, several exercises and a question/answer period.
Bio: Venise Berry is an associate professor of Journalism and African American Studies at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. She has published both fiction and non-fiction. Her current book is Racialism and the Media: Black Jesus, Black Twitter and the First black American President (Peter Lang, June 2020). She is co-author of two non-fiction books about film – The Historical Dictionary of African American Cinema (Scarecrow Press, 2007 & 2nd Ed. 2015) and The 50 Most Influential Black Films (Citadel 2001). She is also the author of three national bestselling novels; So Good, An African American Love Story (1996), All of Me, A Voluptuous Tale (2000) and Colored Sugar Water (2002).
